Pope Benedict XVI reasserted the primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says other Christian communities are either defective or not true churches and Catholicism provides the only true path to salvation.This is the theological equivalent of saying "My dad can beat up your dad!" Part of the reason the Catholics like to give the finger to other Christian churches is because the other churches don't accept the Pope as the Vicar of Christ on Earth ('cause, ya know.. he's not. He's just some fucking pederast in a funny hat).

The doctrine of catholism has always held that ground. Benedict XVI only asserted what was already written in the Apostle's Creed. BTW, the world "catholic" translates (in greek) to "universal".
Religion isn't the real reason behing much violence at all. Politics and wealth are. Religion is a convenient rallying cry and has to be used to "justify" the actions of greed and hatred in order to appease those who would oppose the actions carried out for their true reasons.
